There are many different tools used when manufacturing a carpet. Besides the already mentioned looms there are also some smaller tools that are used.

The heavy comb is used to beat down the knots in the carpet.

Comb - usually made of wood and metal. It is used to pack together the knots and the weft in the rows after every row in the carpet has been tied.

The comb is beaten up and down along the warp in order to secure the knots.
A finer comb is used in more exclusive carpets.

This kind of comb is made entirely of metal, is used in finer and more closely tied carpets, for example Isfahan and Nain.
Scissors are used to trim the pile of the carpet.

Scissors - specially made in metal. It is used for cutting the pile on the carpet after one or more rows have been tied.

A hooked knife is used in carpet manufacturing.

Knife with a hook - in reality this knife has two functions. It is partly used to hook onto the yarn between the warp threads with the small hook and also to cut the yarn afterwards.
The spindel is used to spin the yarn to be used for the production of carpets.

Spindle - used when spinning wool by hand. It usually consists of a rod and an attached trundle which stabilizes the weight when the tool is spinning. When rotating the wool it is twined into yarn.
Metal spikes in the brush are used when brushing the carpet's pile.

Brush - a very simple tool consisting of small metalspikes attached to a soft bedding. It is used to brush the wool and the threads when repairing and when manufacturing the carpet.
The carpet's design is drawn on squared paper where each square represents a knot.

Design plate - when manufacturing workshop carpets the pattern is drawn on a squared sheet where every square corresponds to one single knot. The weaver follows this design plate as a guidline, both for the colouring and the layout of the carpet. By using a design plate you achieve a more exact carpet. Sometimes this is also used in some villages where finer carpets are made. The design plates are also called talim.
